Curriculum
Peyton Elementary follows the curriculum approved by the Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Education. We are a Professional Learning Community that works collaboratively to educate our students. Teachers work together in “instructional teams.” Flexible groupings may be used during the day to provide instruction that closely matches student needs.
The elementary school curriculum promotes skill development in core academic areas based on the Colorado Academic Standards, which you can explore linked here. The development of language-related skills is emphasized. Students are provided many opportunities to apply learned skills through activities that require higher levels of thinking, such as creating projects, writing reports, and preparing presentations. Our core curricular resources include Wonders(ELA) and Savvas Realize (Math, Social Studies).
Music, Physical Education, Art, and Library supplement the academic curriculum. Special Education classes, a Gifted and Talented program, and a Culturally Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) add to the educational programs and are available for eligible students. In addition, all students receive interventions in ELA and math through WIN (What I Need) time. Also, our school Counselor supports student learning through guidance lessons in classrooms, small groups, and individual support.
Homework
Peyton Elementary views homework as an integral part of the school experience, only to reinforce critical and foundational skills. Regular homework assignments help students learn good study habits, such as responsibility, perseverance, self-discipline, and time management. Through frequent and successful participation in homework, children discover that learning takes place all the time, in school, and at home. Homework also supports our emphasis on community collaboration and partnership. Teachers determine homework assignments and due dates, and a content area grade may also be given for a homework assignment.
There are three basic types of homework:
Daily reading - may include silent, oral, or shared family reading
Daily practice and review - may include drill, practice, and review in spelling, math, or other content areas
Assignments and projects - may include a variety of assignments by the classroom teacher in addition to the completion of unfinished regular classroom
Report Cards/Grading System
Progress reports are sent home mid-quarter, and report cards are sent home after the end of each quarter. Please review progress reports and report cards with your child and make goals for achievement for the upcoming grading period. Students are also recognized with quarterly awards for A/B Honor Roll, A Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and other academic and behavior awards. Information on quarterly awards ceremonies will be sent out prior to the awards so parents/guardians can plan accordingly.
A/B Honor Roll - Any student who successfully earns A’s and B’s on the Academic section of his/her report card
A Honor Roll - Any student who successfully earns all A’s on the Academic section of his/her report card
Perfect Attendance - Any student who has been present all day, every day (no tardies) for the entire quarter. A Perfect Attendance award for the entire year will be presented at the last awards ceremony for students who maintain perfect attendance for the year.
